Colombia: VIVA suspends new domestic routes from Cali

Colombian low-cost airline VIVA announced the suspension of three new domestic routes from 1 March, due to the closure of its base at Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (CLO).

In a press release, the company said the measure will be carried out «due to external macroeconomic factors, the lack of capital injection by an investor and awaiting the definition by Aeronáutica Civil and the national government for the approval of the alliance with Avianca, which would turn around this difficult time for the company».

In this way, VIVA will reduce its offer in Cali and will operate 17 fewer weekly flights.

New routes suspended

• Cali (CLO) – Cartagena (CTG) – Cali (CLO): last flight will take place on 28 February.
• Cali (CLO) – Santa Marta (SMR) – Cali (CLO): last flight will take place on 28 February.
• Cali (CLO) – San Andrés (ADZ) – Cali (CLO): last flight will take place on 28 February.

On 22 January, the airline ceased operations on the route between Cali (CLO) and Pasto (PSO). In November 2022, VIVA had stopped flying between San Andres (ADZ) and Pereira (PEI).

«It is important to note that VIVA will be responsible for the protection of passengers with confirmed reservations for the flights affected by the decision to suspend the routes, in compliance with the stipulations contained in its contracts of carriage and in the aeronautical regulations in force in Colombia», the company said.

In this regard, the company clarified that customers will have the flexibility to make changes to their itineraries up to thirty days after the originally scheduled travel date or may choose to receive compensation for their ticket.
