Carrasco Airport Implements Advanced Landing System to Improve Operations in Low Visibility
Carrasco International Airport (MVD), Uruguay's main air terminal, is advancing in the implementation of a Category IIIb Precision Instrument Landing System (ILS CAT IIIb)—a cutting-edge technology that enables safe landings even in minimal visibility caused by fog or adverse weather conditions.
This type of system, widely used at high-traffic airports across Europe and North America, represents one of the highest levels of air navigation assistance. Its implementation in Montevideo will place Carrasco among the most advanced airports in South America for low-visibility operations, alongside terminals such as Ezeiza, Guarulhos, and El Dorado.
According to Aeropuertos Uruguay, the project includes the installation of new radio navigation equipment, a weather station with strategically placed sensors along the main runway, and a LED lighting system featuring 2,000 new lights, boosting both precision and energy efficiency.
Construction began in January 2025 and is progressing as scheduled. The first phase, focused on secondary runway 01-19 and its taxiways, has already been completed. The second phase, which involves the main runway 07-25, will take place between June and November. During this period, the main runway will be closed. To maintain operational continuity, the secondary runway will be used for takeoffs and landings, although operational restrictions are expected depending on wind conditions and aircraft type.
Additionally, three temporary airport closures are planned due to work at the intersection of both runways. These closures were coordinated with airlines and are scheduled as follows:
• Tuesday, August 12 to Thursday, August 14 (09:00 to 09:00 local time)
• Tuesday, August 19 to Thursday, August 21 (09:00 to 09:00)
• Tuesday, September 2 to Thursday, September 4 (09:00 to 09:00)
During these periods, Carrasco Airport will suspend all operations, and airlines have been informed in advance to reschedule flights. If passengers are affected, carriers will reach out to arrange alternative travel options.
Airport operators say that this technological upgrade will not only reduce weather-related diversions, delays, and cancellations, but also improve operational predictability for airlines, enhancing Carrasco’s reliability as a regional connection hub.
