Brazil and China sign agreement to boost research on Sustainable Aviation Fuel
During President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's official visit to China, representatives from Brazil and China formalized an agreement aimed at advancing research and development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). On Monday, May 12, Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports (MPor), Silvio Costa Filho, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the prestigious Civil Aviation Flight University of China (CAFUC).
The agreement comes at a time when the global aviation industry is ramping up efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, with SAF emerging as one of the most viable short- and medium-term solutions for decarbonization. This bilateral initiative seeks to foster scientific and technical cooperation between the two nations in this critical area.
Brazil already has a regulatory framework in place through the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program, established under the Future Fuel Law (Law No. 14.993/24). This legislation sets ambitious targets for Brazil’s aviation sector, aiming for a 1% emissions reduction by 2027, gradually increasing to 10% by 2037. The MPor, as the government body responsible for formulating and overseeing national civil aviation policies, is leading the implementation of these goals. CAFUC, in turn, brings extensive technical and scientific expertise in aeronautics and sustainability.
According to reporting from Aeroin, a partner media outlet, the MoU outlines a roadmap for cooperation, focusing on several key areas. These include sharing technical knowledge, practical experience, and technological developments related to SAF. It also envisions joint training programs for Brazilian and Chinese professionals, as well as the identification of funding opportunities and the development of collaborative projects that strengthen the entire SAF value chain and promote sustainability in civil aviation.
Specific activities planned under the agreement include joint research on SAF production and application, continuous exchange of technical-scientific information, and the organization of events such as workshops and seminars to disseminate knowledge. The two parties will also conduct joint studies on infrastructure and logistics needed for the efficient production, distribution, and commercialization of SAF at airports in both countries.
Minister Costa Filho highlighted the agreement’s alignment with government priorities, stating: "This memorandum aligns with the Federal Government’s goals for decarbonization and sustainability in the aviation sector, which we strongly support." He added that this collaboration is “one of the key agenda items we are developing during this trip to China with President Lula.”
