Boliviana de Aviación Opens New MRO Facility, Set to Save Over $10 Million Annually
Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) has launched operations at its new Aeronautical Maintenance Center (CMA) at Jorge Wilstermann International Airport (CBB) in Cochabamba. This facility, developed with an investment of over 52 million Bolivianos (approximately $7.5 million USD), will enable the state-owned airline to perform major maintenance services domestically that were previously outsourced abroad.
The Minister of Public Works, Edgar Montaño, stated that the commissioning of these facilities represents a fundamental change for the airline. "Over 52 million Bolivianos were invested so that BoA can save more than $10 million annually on aircraft maintenance," he affirmed during the inauguration ceremony.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much will BoA save with the new hangar? An estimated annual saving of over $10 million.
Where is the hangar located? At Jorge Wilstermann International Airport in Cochabamba.
What type of maintenance will be performed? Line and heavy maintenance, including C-checks for its fleet.
Spanning an area of 11,000 square meters, the new hangar empowers BoA to internalize critical processes. Previously, the company's fleet, primarily composed of Boeing 737 aircraft, was sent to specialized maintenance shops in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States for complex inspections. Montaño highlighted that "now this facility will be able to perform the corresponding maintenance because we have trained personnel."
BoA's fleet consists of three Airbus A330-200s, four Boeing 737-300s, four Boeing 737-700s, seven Boeing 737-800s, and two CRJ-200s.

Reliance on external providers not only led to a considerable outflow of foreign currency, estimated between $8 and $10 million annually, but also affected fleet availability. The time associated with export procedures, international logistics, and subsequent re-importation of the aircraft extended their downtime, impacting service regularity.
The hangar's inauguration is presented as one of the commemorative works for Bolivia's Bicentennial. According to the minister, this infrastructure will allow the airline to "save millions," optimizing not only costs but also the operational efficiency of the country's main carrier.
