Argentina is preparing to receive a key aircraft for its strategy on the white continent. This is a Basler BT-67, a modernized version of the legendary Douglas DC-3, which will operate under the registration LV-VYL. Its main objective is to strengthen logistical capabilities in Antarctica, ensuring the supply of bases, supporting scientific missions, and providing an emergency response capacity in extreme weather conditions.

The aircraft is the result of a cooperation framework between the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces, the Argentine Air Force, and the technology company Mirgor. The agreement stipulates that the aircraft, acquired by the private company, will be operated by military personnel to carry out missions as part of the Antarctic Campaign.

This BT-67, Basler conversion serial number 71, has a rich history. Its airframe corresponds to a Douglas C-47A Skytrain (c/n 12438) built 81 years ago in Oklahoma, USA. It served in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Canadian Air Force before moving to civilian operators and finally being converted by Basler Turbo Conversions. The modernization process, as reported by the company, includes a complete structural reinforcement of the fuselage, the installation of powerful Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-67R turboprop engines, and state-of-the-art avionics.

      What is a Basler BT-67?

Aircraft: It is a conversion and modernization of the classic Douglas DC-3/C-47.

Engines: It uses Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67R turboprops, which are more powerful and reliable than the original piston engines.

Capabilities: It is known for its robustness, ability to operate on unprepared runways (STOL), and its certification to fly in extreme cold conditions, with the option of being equipped with skis for landing on snow and ice.

The LV-VYL, assigned to the operator Voyal, has already conducted test flights in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the headquarters of the conversion company. It is expected to arrive in the country to begin crew training for the Air Force. Its base of operations will be at the Río Grande Naval Air Base in Tierra del Fuego, from where it will be deployed to Petrel Base in Antarctica during the summer campaign.

The incorporation of this aircraft will allow for the coverage of vital logistical routes, such as the connection between the Marambio, Petrel, and Belgrano II bases, facilitating the supply of the latter, which currently relies heavily on maritime transport. Furthermore, it opens the door to resuming operations in the deep Antarctic and reaching the South Pole once again, a capability that Argentina seeks to recover.
