Aena, the Spanish airport operator, has decided to entrust the energy supply for all its centers to Endesa Energía SAU and Iberdrola Clientes SAU over the next five years.

This substantial contract, amounting to 336,211,948.74 euros, has been designed with a particular focus on renewable energies, as part of Aena’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the environment.

The supplied energy will have 100% renewable origin certificates and will be managed through the company’s photovoltaic plants, which will progressively be integrated into the network of Spanish airports.

To achieve efficient allocation, supply points have been grouped into seven lots according to their geographical location. Endesa Energía will be in charge of supplying the centers grouped in five of these lots, while Iberdrola will handle supply to Low Voltage facilities. The only exception is the International Airport Region of Murcia, whose lot will be tendered again as the initial offer was not competitive.

As a preventive measure against market volatility, a fixed price consumption of 36% has been established for the first year, which will increase as more photovoltaic plants come into service.

In addition to the focus on renewable energies, Aena’s strategy also contemplates increasing the self-supply of energy in its facilities through its own photovoltaic plants. This strategy will allow the company to generate its own renewable origin guarantees and decrease its spending on electricity, which has been on the rise in recent years due to soaring energy prices.

Aena will not only consume this sustainable energy in its own operations, but will also supply it to all the companies operating in the airports through its own distribution network.

The new contract aligns with Aena’s Photovoltaic Plan and its Climate Action Plan. The company’s ultimate goal is to reduce its CO2 emissions to be carbon neutral by 2026 and achieve net zero emissions by 2040 across all its airports. This contract is a decisive step towards these ambitious goals, demonstrating Aena’s commitment to the environment and sustainability in the airport sector.
