Indonesian Air Force Super Tucano aircraft collided in midair, resulting in the loss of the lives of all four crew members. The Air Force attributed bad weather as the possible cause of Thursday’s crash of two aircraft during a training mission in East Java.

According to the Jakarta Globe, the accident, which occurred on November 16, involved two Embraer Super Tucano aircraft, each with a pilot and co-pilot. Rescue teams first confirmed the discovery of three bodies of the personnel on board in Puspo district, Pasuruan regency, while the discovery of the fourth aviator was found later.

«It appears that the incident was mainly caused by adverse weather conditions. However, further investigation is needed to confirm this,» Air Force spokesman Air Commodore Agung Sasongkojati told a press conference at the Abdulrahman Saleh Air Base in Malang, East Java.

Commodore Agung explained that the two Tucanos were flying in formation with two other similar aircraft in unfavorable weather conditions that severely limited the pilots’ visibility. One pair of EMB 314 Super Tucanos managed to climb above the storm clouds and eventually made it safely back to their base, but lost visual and radio contact with the other pair of aircraft.

The Air Force dispatched a specialized team to locate and retrieve the flight data recorders of the affected aircraft, whose registration numbers are TT-3111 and TT-3103. «These recorders store cockpit voice recordings, images from the onboard cameras, as well as data on the aircraft’s altitude, speed and location,» Agung said.
