Access to Madrid-Barajas airport terminals restricted at night
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport will increase access controls at night to manage the presence of homeless individuals in its terminals. The measure will apply from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., hours of lower air traffic.
During this time frame, access to the facilities will be limited to travelers with a ticket or boarding pass, their companions, and airport staff. Entry will be routed through specific doors, though the terminals will not be entirely closed, according to airport operator Aena.
The reinforcement of security measures was discussed in the Local Security Committee, which included the National Police, Civil Guard, and Madrid Municipal Police. Aena stated the decision is based on current regulations and its responsibilities as an airport operator.
“Airports are not facilities designed to be inhabited,” Aena emphasized, noting that terminals are transit spaces and that its personnel are not trained or tasked with providing social services.
The operator reported holding technical and institutional meetings with the Madrid City Council, which is legally responsible for primary social care under Law 12/2022 on Social Services of the Community of Madrid.
“Aena has kept the City Council fully informed and has offered to collaborate in any way possible,” the statement read. The company added that it continues to work with the City Council and third-sector organizations to help ensure “a dignified housing solution.”
