Eurowings, the Lufthansa Group’s low-cost carrier, will expand its presence at Berlin/Brandenburg International Airport (BER) by adding eight European destinations, including two in Spain.

From the end of March 2023, the company will strengthen its nearly 30 destinations and double the fleet based at the Berlin airport, adding flights to Larnaca (LCA), Cyprus; Copenhagen (CPH), Denmark; Alicante (ALC) and Malaga (AGP), Spain; Helsinki (HEL), Finland; Rhodes (RHO), Greece; Gothenburg (GSE), Sweden; and Antalya (ATY), Turkey.

In addition to overseas expansion, it will take its BER-based aircraft from three to six in the future. A fourth aircraft is already reinforcing Eurowings’ growth path in the current 2022/23 winter flight schedule.

This expansion comes in response to the withdrawal of international competitors as a result of the pandemic. Easyjet and Ryanair reduced their presence in Berlin with 25% and 5% respectively in Q1 2023, according to Cirum.

«Others are pulling out, we are building,» Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof said at a joint press conference with BER Airport. «Berlin is and remains an absolute tourist magnet and one of the most exciting metropolises in Europe, both culturally and historically. It therefore makes sense for us as a German airline to expand our presence and bring more Eurowings to the capital,» he added.

Aletta von Massenbach, chairwoman of the BER board of directors, said, «The doubling of Eurowings’ aircraft fleet and connections at the capital airport is a strong signal. Globally, the Capital Region is one of the most popular tourist destinations and attracts people from all over the world.»

In addition to the new destinations, the company will maintain its operations to Cologne/Bonn (CGN), Dusseldorf (DUS) and Sttutgart (STR), in Germany; Salzburg (SZG), Austria; Drubrovnik (DBV), Rijeka (RJD), Split (SPU) and Zadar, Croatia; Hurghada (HRG), Egypt; Lanzarote (ACE), Gran Canarias (LPA), Fuerteventura (FUE) and Palma de Mallorca (PMI), Spain; Bastia (BIA), France; Irakleion (KER) and Kos (KGS), Greece; Beirut (BEY), Lebanon; Stockholm (ARN), Sweden.
