Government of Peru to invest in the improvement of eight regional airports

Peru’s Ministry of Transport and Communications will invest more than 270 million dollars to modernize eight regional airports in the country. The so called Third Group of Provincial Airports project “will benefit more than twelve million citizens in the coastal, Andean and Amazonian areas”, said the Ministry.

The program includes reforms and upgrades at the airports of Jauja, Jaén, Ilo, Rioja, Chimbote, Yurimaguas, Huánuco and Chinchero-Cusco.

In the case of Chinchero International Airport, the state project includes the operation and maintenance of the air station, which is already under construction. The objective of the airport is to replace the current Teniente Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cusco, located in a central area.

Its development contemplates the construction of a terminal able to receive international services and thus reduce connections with Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport (LIM). However, the program was not without controversy. Especially, because of its proximity to Ollantaytambo, a town located in the Valle Sagrado with an important archaeological park of Inca ruins.

The works will be executed through a cooperation scheme between the Peruvian government and private investors, under a co-financed state initiative. In this way, they ensure that efficient and safe airport services can be developed, using the highest standards of infrastructure development.

According to the Ministry, the modernization works will boost “commercial, tourist and transit dynamism in the interior of the country, following the decentralization policy that the Executive has been promoting, in addition to generating productive employment and improving the population’s life quality”.
