DHL Express buys 800 million liters of sustainable fuel from bp and Neste

DHL Express signed contracts with bp and Neste, guaranteeing the supply of more than 800 million liters of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) over the next five years.

In a year, DHL Express transports more than 480 million documents and parcels to 220 countries. With these 800 million liters, 12,000 long-haul flights could be operated within the company’s extensive network. Frank Appel, CEO of DHL Group, said: “We are committed to offering greener and more sustainable solutions to our customers, and these agreements with bp and Neste mark an important step towards this end”.

Martin Thomsen, Senior Vice President Aviation at bp, added: “We are proud to complete this agreement. We are leveraging our value chain to make bp an integrated company. Thereby we are using our PAS expertise to design and deliver solutions for our customers’ needs. We will continue to seek to promote PBS to realize the industry’s ambitions to lower its ecological impact.”

Both Neste and bp will supply PBS produced from waste oils. This fuel, from waste and residues, can provide a huge reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Such could be up to 80 percent compared to the conventional jet fuel it replaces. To ensure that the fuel is effectively sustainable, its production avoids the use of feedstocks that compete with food production or cause land-use change.

John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, said:

“These agreements with bp and Neste are stepping stones to our main goal. We want to inspire more suppliers of FFS to address the supply-demand gap that currently exists. We also call on policymakers to put in place the right framework to accelerate the use of PAS in the EU.”

DHL Express intends to pursue more partnerships with sustainable aviation fuel suppliers in the future and to continuously increase the percentage of SAF used in its air operations. Thanks to the contracts with bp and Neste and the previously announced introduction of SAF in DHL’s network in San Francisco (SFO), East Midlands (EMA), and Amsterdam (AMS), the company is on track to reach its target of 10 percent of its operations using SAF by 2026.
