The market between Mexico and Spain is one of the largest and most profitable in Latin America, and within it, Mexico City (MEX) – Madrid (MAD) was the route that reported the biggest profits during 2019.
The strong demand between both destinations draws big attention for airlines. For both Aeroméxico and Iberia, this is the route with the highest number of ASKs. During 2019 Iberia offered three daily flights with Airbus A340-600 and Aeroméxico 18 weekly frequencies with Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Currently, there are four daily flights between the two capitals, with the recovery strengthened by the recent opening of Spain to Mexicans with a completed vaccination scheme.
In addition, the Cancun – Madrid route has recovered and four airlines line up to offer flights: Air Europa, Iberojet, Wamos Air, and the newest competitor, World2Fly. But the market is also experimenting with new point-to-point routes such as Madrid – Cozumel by Iberojet, and Barcelona – Cancun by LEVEL, IAG’s low cost.
To these, Guadalajara (GDL) – Madrid (MAD) will be added by Aeroméxico, as the Governor of Jalisco Enrique Alfaro Ramírez announced today in a press conference, with three weekly flights starting in December of this year operated with Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft and offering fares starting from USD 599 in Economy and USD 1,999 in Premier.

Flight AM36 will depart from Guadalajara on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 2:25 p.m. to arrive in Madrid at 8:00 the next day after 10 hours 35 minutes of flight.
Flight AM39 will depart from Barajas airport on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays at 11:35 pm, landing in Guadalajara at 5:45 am the next day after a 13-hour flight.
Raúl Revuelta Musalem, General Director of the Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), operator of the Guadalajara airport, also participated in the conference. “This is evidence of the progress of Aeroméxico and relying on the growth and modernization of El Tapatio Airport. And it is that, even in times of pandemic, GAP invests more than 15 billion pesos through the Guadalajara 2020-2026 Plan that includes the remodeling of Terminal 1, the construction of a second runway and Terminal 2”.
According to Aena data, Guadalajara was one of the most popular routes without non-stop flights during 2019, with indirect traffic of 23,714 passengers, in addition to Guadalajara being one of Aeroméxico’s secondary hubs, where the company will be able to offer connections to destinations on the West Coast of the United States.
