The Canadian government will proceed with the delivery of a Volga-Dnepr Antonov An-124 aircraft to Ukraine, which had been confiscated last year.
The information was confirmed by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, who was in the United States and Canada last week pursuing an agenda aimed at obtaining more economic and military aid.
The Volga-Dnepr Antonov An-124, registration number RA-82078, was located at Toronto Pearson International Airport when the Russian invasion of Ukraine erupted in February 2022. In April of the same year, the court ordered the confiscation of 12 aircraft belonging to the Russian company as part of a criminal proceeding initiated at the request of Antonov. In addition to the RA-82078 in Canada, three other An-124s were located in Leipzig, Germany.
According to Militarnyi, in recent years, Volga-Dnepr has issued airworthiness certificates for the An-124s themselves, with the consent of the Russian authorities, “putting the safe operation of the aircraft at risk, which is a violation of the provisions of international conventions“.
Thus, almost 14 months after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and as part of new economic sanctions against Moscow and assets of Russian companies, Canada will transfer the An-124 RA-82078 to the Ukrainian government, which will be handed over to the National Agency of Ukraine for the Identification, Search and Management of Assets Obtained from Corruption and Other Crimes.
“During this visit, we were once again convinced that Ukraine has reliable friends and partners that we can count on. We continue to strengthen the pro-Ukrainian coalition in the world and participate even more in the restoration of Ukraine“, concluded the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
