Lufthansa launched the first intercontinental service of its Boeing 787 to Newark

On December 1 Lufthansa began the first long-haul operations of its Boeing 787-9 on the Frankfurt (FRA) – Newark (EWR) route. Previous weeks, the airline conducted domestic flights on the Dreamliner for equipment familiarization with pilots and cabin crew.

Flight LH 402 was operated in a 787 registered D-ABPA and christened “Berlin” took off from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) at 14:02 local time and landed at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) at 16:04, after eight hours and one minute.

“Today, our first dreamliner took off for Newark. It is the first long-haul destination for our first Lufthansa 787. Over the past few weeks, the D-ABPA and its crews flew between Frankfurt and Munich to gain the necessary experience, test our processes, and obtain the mandatory takeoffs and landings. It is always a pleasure and a special moment to send a new aircraft on its first long-haul flight with passengers,” said Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa.

Lufthansa will offer 4,116 seats per week on the Frankfurt (FRA) – Newark (EWR) route operated on Boeing 787-9s during the winter. The airline is scheduled to operate this service on Dreamliner until March 25, 2023 according to the Cirium platform.
