HENSOLDT delivers air defense radars for Ukraine in record time

The TRML-4D radar is part of the IRIS-T SLM system that Germany will deliver to Ukraine to upgrade its air defense capabilities.

HENSOLDT reported that it is to supply four of its high-performance radars in record time for Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T SLM air defense system, designed to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities. As part of an order from Diehl Defence worth a two-digit million euro sum, one of the TRML-4D radars has already been delivered, with three more to follow within a few months.

Thomas Müller, CEO of HENSOLDT, said: “The situation in Ukraine requires quick and decisive action. Due to a serial production line and the commitment of our employees, we are able to deliver such systems to protect the population in the shortest possible time.”

TRML-4D uses the latest Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar technology with multiple digitally shaped beams. It is capable of detecting, tracking and classifying various types of aerial targets, with a focus on small, fast and low-flying and/or manoeuvring cruise missiles and aircraft, as well as hovering helicopters. It ensures the rapid detection and tracking of some 1,500 targets in a radius of up to 250 km.

Strengthening Ukrainian air defense capabilities

Almost since the beginning of the conflict, Kiev has been asking its Western partners to transfer modern air defense systems in order to hinder Russian air operations beyond the altitude covered by MANPADS-type light systems.

But it is since the last major Russian cruise missile attack, which destroyed a large part of the country’s electrical infrastructure, coupled with the successful use of a large number of Iranian loitering munitions, that the West has become aware of the urgency of reinforcing Ukrainian air defense.

To this end, the US is to supply 10 NASAMS anti-aircraft missile batteries, which will be complemented by four German IRIS-T SLM systems.
