Volaris strengthens its presence in AIFA with new routes and two additional aircraft

-

As part of its expansion process at Felipe Ángeles International Airport, also known as AIFA, Volaris will inaugurate six new routes as of September 15th and will base two new aircraft to operate at the terminal. In addition, the company reported that it expects to carry a total of 150.000 passengers to and from the new Mexico City airport during 2022.

From there, the airline will offer daily services to Guadalajara (GDL), La Paz (LAP), Puerto Escondido (PXM) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR) from September 15th. One day later, it will inaugurate connections to Oaxaca (OAX) and Los Cabos (SJD). All flights will be operated with 186-passenger Airbus A320neo aircraft.

The new connections will be added to those already available to Cancún (CUN), Tijuana (TIJ), Mérida (MID), Mexicali (MXL) and Bahías de Huatulco (HUX).

Volaris routes to and from AIFA as of September 2022.

However, the delay in the delivery of new aircraft by the European manufacturer forced to rearrange the initially planned growth scheme. At a press conference, Volaris Executive Vice President, Holger Blankenstein, referred to this situation but assured that it should not affect the operation.

Only two new aircraft are expected to join the fleet during the rest of this year, which the company expects to close with 115 operational airplanes. “The routes we are announcing are already covered by the two aircraft we are basing at Felipe Ángeles International Airport”, Blankenstein said.

“We are a business, we have to look at the profitability of the routes and we will gradually add capacity as demand is stimulated”, he added. So far, Volaris has carried 60.000 passengers to and from the new airport, a figure it expects to increase considerably by the end of 2022. On the other hand, it reduced its capacity at Mexico City International Airport by 10% in August and expects to reduce it by another 10% before September 15th.

Largest operator at AIFA

With the addition of services starting by mid-September, Volaris will offer up to one million seats per month between Mexico City’s two commercial airports and Toluca International Airport.

It will also become the airline with the largest number of destinations and seats to and from Felipe Ángeles International Airport from September. According to data obtained by Aviacionline through the Cirium platform, it will operate 409 flights during the month and will offer 76.704 seats.

From October, and until the end of the year, the schedule will be expanded to include around 580 flights per month and 108.000 available seats.
