To avoid sanctions, Bolivia cancels flights connecting Argentina and Venezuela

-

The situation surrounding Conviasa, its cargo subsidiary Emtrasur and the aircraft it incorporated this year previously owned by the Iranian company Mahan Air had a new and complex episode on Wednesday night.

Boliviana de Aviación decided to cancel the flights between Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Buenos Aires to complete the trip started by the Airbus A340-600 incorporated by the Venezuelan state-owned aviation company just a few days ago.

At the international airport of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, personnel of the Bolivian airline informed Conviasa passengers that the operation of flight OB 9708 to Buenos Aires was cancelled.

According to the Venezuelan media Monitoreamos, BoA authorities indicated that the Argentine authorities had “denied the operation permit” and passengers who had departed from Caracas should return to the city of origin.

In Buenos Aires, Boliviana de Aviación cancelled flight OB 9709 and according to reports from the terminal, transferred the affected passengers -about 140- to nearby hotels while waiting for a resolution of the situation.

At 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, the Airbus A340-642 with registration number YV3535 and christened “General en Jefe Rafael Urdaneta” took off from Caracas to arrive at the Viru Viru airport.

It arrived there in the afternoon and was waiting for the completion of the Bolivian airline’s special operation that would allow it to transfer passengers to Ezeiza and embark passengers coming from Buenos Aires and then return to the Venezuelan capital.

Sources commented that the possibility of sanctions from the U.S. Treasury Department for the support of operations to companies included in the OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) list caused a re-evaluation of the risk and forced the cancellation of the operation.

This is a developing story.
