Lufthansa took delivery of the first Airbus A350-900 with a new upgraded Business Class cabin: the aircraft registered D-AIVC was christened at Munich Airport (MUC) by Bavarian Minister President Dr. Markus Söder.
“The A350 is the quietest and most fuel-efficient long-haul aircraft in our fleet. With a significantly improved Business Class on board, this aircraft also represents the start of one of the largest product modernizations in Lufthansa’s history,” said Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa Group.
“This aircraft is sustainable and offers customers a premium flight experience. The ‘Munich’ is a worthy ambassador of the Bavarian capital in the world,” added Spohr.
The D-AIVC will be operating from Lufthansa’s five-star hub to Montreal (YUL), Vancouver (YVR) and Toronto (YYZ) in Canada. Lester Pearson International Airport (YYZ) was the first destination for the company’s new aircraft, which operated on April 29, 2022.
New upgraded Business Class
“Munich” is the first aircraft in Lufthansa’s fleet to offer its customers an upgraded Business Class. All seats have direct aisle access, can be converted into a two-meter bed, and provide more storage space. In addition, users have more room in the shoulder area.
The addition of the upgraded Business Class marks a start in the German airline’s cabin renovation process. Next year, Lufthansa will introduce a new premium product in all its travel classes, Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First Class.

Six aircraft have already been christened “Munich”.
The A350 is the sixth aircraft to be named after the Bavarian capital. This means that Lufthansa can now look back on more than six decades of flying with a “Munich”.
The first aircraft to be named after the Bavarian capital was a Boeing 707 with registration number D-ABOF, also called “Godchild” on October 11, 1960, the christening was performed at the former Munich – Riem Airport. The godmother was Ilse Vogel, the wife of the then mayor Dr. Hans-Jochen
The fifth “Munich” was an Airbus A380 with registration number D-AIMB, which was christened by Edith von Welser-Ude on July 28, 2010, and is no longer part of the Lufthansa fleet.
Airbus A350, the five-star hub mainstay
Lufthansa currently has a fleet of 18 Airbus A350s and expects to take delivery of a further three aircraft for a total of twenty-one aircraft and all will be based in Munich (MUC) to serve a large part of the airline’s long-haul flights.
With the retirement of the A380s, the airline will soon install First Class cabins on the A350s to meet premium demand from its five-star hub, and these new-generation aircraft will also replace the Airbus A340-600s in the coming years.
According to data obtained by Aviacionline via Cirium, Lufthansa will have an offer of 66,916 seats per week on 228 aircraft operations on Airbus A350s from Munich (MUC) to eighteen long-haul destinations for the 2022 northern summer season.
