Rogelio Jimenez Pons, Undersecretary of Transportation of the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) informed that the entity decided to immediately dismiss Victor Hernandez, Director of Seneam (Navigation Services in the Mexican Airspace).
The dismissal comes in the context of an incident that occurred between two Volaris Airbus A320s in which one that was in the final phase of its landing had to abort the maneuver because the other was occupying the head of the runway.
According to Milenio newspaper, Jimenez Pons indicated that the incident is the last link in a chain of situations that conditioned Hernandez’s continuity prior to what happened this Saturday. “It is the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Jimenez Pons.
Although the undersecretary downplayed the incident, pointing out that it did not escalate due to the work of the pilots – an aspect that was also commented on by Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena on his social networks -, it is true that in recent days many voices have chosen to highlight the complex panorama of the historic air terminal in the Mexican capital.
Beltranena, moreover, cleared the company of what happened: “Thanks to the training of our pilots and their impeccable monitoring of processes, no passenger or crew member was at risk during the situation reported at #AICM on the night of May 7,” he said.
“Teams, crews and alert systems prepare daily to face similar situations that do not depend on airlines, and that can happen in aviation,” Beltranena added.
Both IFALPA, the international pilots’ union, and its Mexican counterpart expressed their concern about the operational safety of the AICM, which is “saturated” and with a redesign of the airspace that they consider deficient and dangerous.
