Cancun’s airport improved its waiting times

During a meeting between the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, and the representative of the National Institute of Migration (INM) held at the Cancun International Airport, it was pointed out that the airport has speeded up waiting times thanks to an increase in personnel.

Torruco Marqués said that in the January-April period of this year, 3,323,657 passengers passed through the largest airport in Quintana Roo. The official indicated that thanks to the cross-referencing of data with ASUR -operator of the complex- it is possible to determine in advance which are the busiest times of the day. With this, the busiest shifts are reinforced with more personnel.

Terminals reduce waiting times

With these changes, the average waiting time at Terminal 2 has been reduced from 12 minutes (March) to 7 minutes (April). The maximum wait time has been reduced by almost 30 percent, from 96 to 60 minutes.

According to Torruco Marqués, Terminal 3 achieved a reduction in waiting time for those months from 15 to 13 minutes. The maximum time, meanwhile, dropped from 82 to 57 minutes. Terminal 4, finally, maintains an average wait time of 8 minutes and the maximum time went from 56 minutes in March to 54 minutes in April.

North American travelers are a majority

Of the almost 3.4 million passengers that transited the terminals of Cancun International Airport, 57% came from the United States and 11% from Canada. The rest is made up of travelers from Mexico, Colombia, United Kingdom, France, Argentina, Brazil, Germany and Spain, among others.

Torruco Marqués said that after the reform of the Migration Law -through which the federal government ceded control to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs- during the first four months of 2022 the INM has rejected 8,786 visitors, originating, among others, from Colombia, Turkey, India, Brazil, the United States, and Cuba.

The migration authority is also in charge of implementing the automated tools it deems appropriate. This will seek to expedite the entry and exit of tourists.
