Arajet completes its first demonstration flight to Barranquilla, Colombia

-

Arajet, the Dominican Republic’s new airline, successfully completed its first demonstration flight to Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport (BAQ) in Colombia, according to Dominican media Arecoa.

The operation was carried out last Friday (May 27th) by a Boeing 737-8 with registration number HI1027 and named as “Valle Nuevo”. The aircraft is the second in the fleet and was delivered at mid-month. Initially, Arajet will operate five aircraft of this type, all of them brand new.

According to its plans, it expects to carry close to seven million passengers per year and offer 43 routes, 23 of which are not currently available in the market. Introduced last March as the Caribbean’s first ultra-low-cost airline, Arajet plans to create a hub at its base in Santo Domingo (SDQ) and offer services to the rest of the Americas from there.

The business is led by Víctor Méndez Pacheco and Mike Powell, who previously served as CFO of Wizz Air and was involved in the beginning of Flybondi in Argentina. It also has the financial backing of investors from Bain Capital Special Situations and Griffin Global Asset Management, as well as the support of the Dominican government and Vinci Airports.
