March results: Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus and Volaris

Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus and Volaris presented preliminary reports of their March 2022 operating statistics. Mexico’s three main airlines obtained better results compared to the same month of 2021. The accumulated first quarter of the year also evidences the recovery of domestic and international traffic, accompanied by an increase in the demand and the lifting of mobility restrictions.

The following is a summary of the main results of the three airlines in terms of demand, seats offered, passengers transported and occupancy factor compared to March 2021 and in the comparison between the first quarter of this year and the previous one.

Aeroméxico

In March, the flag carrier transported 1.64 million passengers. This represents a 40.5% increase over the same month last year. The largest increase was in the international market: 111.1%. In the domestic market, Grupo Aeroméxico carried 24.1% more passengers.

Between January and March of this year, the company transported 4,142,000 passengers. This represents an increase of 31.2% compared to the first quarter of 2021.

The total supply of seats offered per kilometer, whether occupied or not, increased by 57.3%. The capacity growth in the international market was 85.7%, while in domestic flights it was 24.5% higher. Compared to the first quarter of 2021, numbers from January to March are 40% above.

On the other hand, Grupo Aeroméxico’s effective demand during March, measured in passengers transported in relation to distance flown, increased 71.2%. This was notable in the international market, with 134.7% more demand than in March 2021. In the domestic market, the increase was 19.2%. In the first quarter, it was 58.4% higher than the same period last year.

Finally, the load factor was 80.1%. The results of seats occupied compared to total seats offered are showing, once again, a greater increase in the international market: 13.4 percentage points higher than in March 2021. On domestic flights, the occupancy factor decreased by 3.6 percentage points. However, on a cumulative quarterly basis, it continues to be positive. The variation with respect to the same period last year was 6.8 percentage points.

Viva Aerobus

Compared to March of last year, the Monterrey-based low-cost airline reported a 45.5% increase in the number of passengers transported. In total, it transported 1.57 million passengers.

The occupancy factor reached 86.8%, two percentage points higher than in March 2021.

Once again, the international market grew the most. With 190,000 passengers carried and an occupancy factor of 75.6%, Viva Aerobus transported 109% more passengers. Its seat offer was 31.5% higher in the domestic market and 200% higher in the international market.

In the first quarter of 2022, it transported more than 4.25 million passengers, with an occupancy factor of 83.3%. The numbers demonstrate its recovery compared to the first three months of 2021: the number of passengers transported increased by 65.7% and the supply of available seats increased by 61%.

Volaris

For its part, Volaris transported 2.5 million passengers, 61.8% more than in March 2021. Compared to that month, international passenger demand grew by 123%. In the domestic market, the increase was 45.6%. According to this, the low-cost airline was the Mexican operator that transported the most passengers.

The numbers are similar in the accumulated quarterly figures. From January to March, it transported 7 million passengers. Compared to the same period in 2021, and in line with the growth in demand, the company’s capacity increased by 49.8%. Thus, it became the Mexican airline with the highest passenger traffic during the first three months of 2022.
