Air Canada makes it easier for Ukrainians to fly to Canada with Aeroplan points donations

Air Canada is donating 100 million Aeroplan points to support the Canadian government’s initiative to bring Ukrainians to Canada.

The points will help facilitate the move and can be used on flights operated by Air Canada and its Star Alliance partners including Lufthansa, LOT Polish Airlines, Swiss, United and other airlines.

The Shapiro Foundation is also collaborating in this effort and Miles4Migrants, a non-profit organization, which will be in charge of administering and facilitating flight reservations.

“Together with our employees, we are ready and prepared to assist and support the Canadian government’s plans for Ukrainians to Canada. With our donation of 100 million Aeroplan points, we offer our global network and the strength of our Star Alliance partnerships, to facilitate travel to Canada,” said Michael Rousseau, president and chief executive officer of Air Canada.

“As we have seen Ukrainians displaced, our donor community has responded once again, donating to support flights for Ukrainian families to arrive safely in recent weeks,” said Diane Padilla, executive director of Miles4Migrants.

“We will double Aeroplan members’ donations for travel to Ukraine and donate the equivalent of up to 50 million Aeroplan points to help more people travel to Canada,” said Ed Shapira, trustee of the Shapiro Foundation.

Aeroplan members can assist in this initiative to make it easier for Ukrainians to travel to Canada by donating Aeroplan points to the Ukraine Relief Fund.

From April 20, 2022, until July 2022, members who donate Aeroplan points to the Ukraine Relief Fund or Miles4Migrants will multiply the impact of their support, as the value of the points donated will be matched by a matching donation of up to 50,000,000 points, by the Shapiro Foundation.

Air Canada’s support of Ukraine’s humanitarian relief to date includes:

  • An Air Canada donation of $10 per booking was made on its website as of March 22 for a total donation of $250,000 to Ukraine humanitarian relief.
  • Air Canada employees and the Air Canada Foundation donated $170,000 to help Ukraine.
  • On March 9, Air Canada operated a special humanitarian cargo flight on behalf of Airlink and other relief partners that transported hospital beds, medical and humanitarian supplies to Warsaw, Poland, and medicines destined for Lviv, Ukraine.
  • Continued transport of medical supplies to Europe with final destination in Ukraine.
  • Transportation of rapid response teams to expand operations in Europe to assist incoming Ukrainian families.
