Volotea’s mega-expansion: more than 30 new routes in seven countries

Volotea has been building its itinerary schedule for the upcoming northern summer season, adding dozens of connections, many of them new, from its bases in Spain, France, Greece, and Italy to different tourist spots in the Mediterranean, in line with its focus on connecting secondary European cities.

The company has bases in 18 cities: Hamburg (XFW) in Germany; Asturias (OVD) and Bilbao (BIO) in Spain; Bordeaux (BOD), Lyon (LYS), Marseille (MRS), Nantes (NTE), Strasbourg (SXB) and Toulouse (TLS) in France; Athens (ATH) in Greece and Alghero (AHO), Cagliari (CAG), Naples (NAP), Olbia (OLB), Palermo (PMO), Venice and Verona in Italy; serving more than 100 cities in 16 countries, including Algeria which was inaugurated last December 16.

“We will continue to take every opportunity to strengthen our local presence, without forgetting our mission to improve the connectivity of underserved cities and connect medium-sized airports with European capitals, such as Rome,” explained Valeria Rebasti, Country Manager of Volotea Italy and Southeast Europe.

On this occasion, the company is focusing on France, where it is present on 25 of the 31 routes announced at the time of writing. In its other two markets (Spain and Italy) it is directly confronted with Ryanair and Wizz Air, while in France, it has Easyjet and Transavia.

Volotea also resumes its flights to Croatia with 14 routes from Split and Dubrovnik to France, Italy, and Greece. The company is one of the few airlines that will operate from several French cities to Croatia during the summer tourist season.

Nantes will have the largest number of connections, with eight new connections. Céline Lacroix, Volotea’s Head of International Development, stated that they have doubled the number of jobs they offer from their base in Nantes where they landed in December 2012. As a result, they have created 117 direct jobs (up from 50 in 2012) and 585 indirect jobs.

In 2021, Volotea became a 100% Airbus fleet, replacing its Boeing 717s with aircraft from the European manufacturer. The airline, which had planned to carry out this aircraft unification in 2023, has brought forward its plans to improve its cost base in the next 2-3 years and increase its network offer, being able to count on greater capacity and greater flight range.

At present it has a fleet of twenty Airbus A319ceo and sixteen Airbus A320ceo; five more A319s are pending delivery.

According to data obtained through Cirium, Italy will continue to be its most important market, accounting for 35.4% of seat supply by July 2022, followed by France with 25.2%, with Greece closing the podium with 18.8%; Spain and Croatia follow with 15.8% and 2.7% respectively.
