Lufthansa Cargo receives its last two 777F, announces MD-11’s final flight date

-

Lufthansa Cargo, the cargo division of German airline Lufthansa, has just taken delivery of its latest two Boeing 777Fs. The aircraft, registered D-ALFJ and D-ALFK, will be based at the airline’s hub at Frankfurt Airport.

These two new aircraft bring Lufthansa Cargo’s fleet to eleven Boeing 777Fs. These are in addition to the four aircraft of the same type operated by sister company AeroLogic. In a press release, Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, remarked that “we are pleased to be able to offer our customers the capacity of our fifteen highly efficient freighters. Thanks to the availability of belly cargo on the aircraft of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and Eurowings, which are gradually increasing their frequencies, we are building a dense network with global capacity”.

D-ALFK is a new aircraft from Boeing’s Everett, Washington, facility. With this acquisition, Lufthansa Cargo concluded its options to purchase freighters from the U.S. manufacturer. The D-ALFJ, on the other hand, was purchased on the second-hand market. Due to excess demand faced by the cargo industry, and in order to have the aircraft available as soon as possible, the aircraft will not immediately be painted with Lufthansa Cargo livery. Therefore, in the interim, the aircraft will be all white with only an inscription on the fuselage.

With these deliveries, Lufthansa Cargo has completed its wide-body aircraft fleet expansion program. According to the specialized site planespotters.net, the airline still has to add two A321P2Fs (D-AEUA and D-AEUC) from its sister company Lufthansa Cityline.

Date for MD-11’s last flight announced

The Lufthansa Group’s last three-engine jet, which coincidentally is the last MD-11 registered in Europe, now displays messages saying “Goodbye” and “Thank you, MD-11” stamped on its fuselage. With this, Lufthansa Cargo salutes the model for its more than 23 years of service.

The last flights of the aircraft in question, D-ALCC, will be to Cairo, Tel Aviv, Chicago, and New York. Its last landing, at Frankfurt airport, is scheduled for noon on October 15, 2021.
