Eastern Airlines orders 35 Boeing 777 conversions and dives into the cargo market

-

Eastern acquired 35 Boeing 777s, distributed among all variants of the long-haul twin-engine aircraft. These aircraft will undergo P2F (Passenger to Freighter) conversion. The so-called Express Freighters will serve the e-commerce cargo market and are expected to enter service in the first quarter of 2022.

“We are delighted to offer this service to customers who have struggled to find capacity in the cargo market,” Steve Harfst, Eastern Airlines President and CEO, said in a company statement. “This is not only a game-changer for Eastern but will also transform the industry,” he added.

Eastern’s 777s will be certified with an “E-Class” main deck, capable of carrying volumetric cargo between Asia and the United States. The design converts the B777’s main deck into a true freighter, allowing its full volume to accommodate low-density, express cargo. They will not be subject to the restrictions on cargo products that are imposed on conventional passenger aircraft used as freighters.

“Our conversion method – designed specifically for express cargo – is more efficient and cost-effective. This allows us to better serve our customers’ needs while maintaining a competitive price,” Harfst added. Future plans for the design include a palletized cargo system and a main deck cargo door. Eastern Air Cargo will offer general cargo transport, wet-lease (ACMI), and dry-lease services.
